Laurence Broderick - The Otter Man of Skye

Stone is infinitely variable in form, veining, colour, density and texture. It is the ideal material in which to carve sculpture. Some of it is very rare and therefore restricted, whilst other stone is desirable for its beauty. Laurence Broderick's work has been devoted to its study, relating the character of an individual piece of stone to the rhythmic flow of the land and to the shape of the life which it supports.

Each piece of stone suggests the way it might be used to release a recognisable shape hidden within it. Laurence Broderick has adopted this approach to his carving, for he is a pre-eminent carver sculptor, having a special affection for the various Scottish stones from which he releases whatever shape the stone suggests to him. He spends much of his time in summer on Skye where the lines of the hills and the shapes of the otters he sculpts have a resonance and have been the centre of his attention for years.

This is the second exhibition of Laurence Broderick's work Falle Fine Art has shown. The twenty-three exhibits either carved in stone or cast in bronze offer a rare opportunity to appreciate the beautiful sensual work of this fine internationally known sculptor.

Laurence Broderick is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an Associate Member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. He has been awarded a number of major public commissions, including the twice life size bull for the Bull Ring in BIrmingham, a leaping salmon for the Chester Business Park and an elephant for the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Society of British Sculptors, the Contemporary Portrait Society, the Society of Wildlife Artists and the Royal West of England Academy.
